I was always told (and have read articles on) that you should not jog or run
if you are more than 35 pounds overweight. It's too hard on your knees as
you come down with 4 times your weight when you run/jog. It's hard enough on
your knees just to have 100 lbs. of excess weight walking around, but to
compound that by running could be really bad.

Try walking faster and faster before you start to run. It actually takes
more effort to walk very fast than it does to jog. I used to walk on the
treadmill at 4.8-5.0 mph and those around me who were running at the same
speed said it was easier for them to do that. Walk properly with arms bent
and pumping and take shorter steps than a normal stroll. Have you seen how
speed walkers walk? Try and emulate that and you'll get a great workout, you
don't have to run. Also, if you have access to a treadmill, vary your
workout between walking very fast on the flat and then slower at an incline.
