Subject: [CyberTOPS] Healthy Shopping - Expensive? I don't think so

Hi all,
I have heard the arguments that eating healthy is too expensive - but I have
to disagree.

First, let's consider a family size bag of Doritos (one of my trigger
foods). The package can be found on sale for about 2.50 a bag in my area.
That's for less than a pound of chips. When compared to a 3 pound bag of
apples for about the same price,it seems to me that not only am I getting
more for my money when I buy the apples - but I am getting a health boost as
well. Eating an apple instead of a serving of Doritos will perhaps save me
from a gain on the scale...or as we all may struggle with, the weakness of
having more than one serving or as I have done in my past - the entire bag!
With that comes the feeling of failure and guilt that may lead to eating
other unhealthy foods that may be in my pantry.

Now - for some reason, that bag of apples does not tempt me that same way,
so it lasts a lot longer and that means that I buy less of them which makes
them quite the bargain.

Now, add to the 'cost' of the Doritos, the health risks that they contribute
to when compared with fresh fruit or vegetables. Include the cost of the
medical bills that those Doritos (and other foods like them) will eventually
cost you.

You are worth the extra care that healthy food will provide you and the
energy that it will give you as well. I have found that with a little
pre-planning with menus - there is so much less waste because you have
purchased and planned for the week in advance. Take that list to the grocers
and stick to that list, and you will find that healthy shopping does cost
less in the long run - and you will be more energetic and happier on
weigh-in day.

Oh - and I am not wealthy. My husband has spent a good portion of the year
laid off and I am a full-time student right now. I just pay closer attention
to the sale papers and sometimes base my menus around what bargains I find,
but I do spend LESS money doing this than when I just walk in the grocer and
get 'whatever', because when I do that - all the foods that I should eat
sparingly seem to jump in my basket and jack my bill (and my weight) up.
Don't discount my message until you try it.

Eating healthy and saving money,
Yvonne
It's MY time in 2009!
