I did not see any replies to this post. Linda, Your chapter is not a 
non-profit organization. It is an affiliate of a non-profit organization. 
TOPS Club Inc. is a non- profit organization in Wisconsin, chapters in 
Wisconsin are non-profit chapters. But you are not in Wisconsin.

 You need to file an IRS form  SS-4. You can find it and the instructions on 
TOPS form S-069 "TOPS instructions for IRS Form SS-4"

The SS-4 is a request for EIN (Employer Identification Number) this number 
and form will allow you to open a checking account. This number will remain 
with the chapter as long as it is in existence.

If you don't use this number then you must use your social security number 
and you have to account for the bank account in your taxes at the end of the 
year. using the EIN number prevents this.

I hope that I have explained it. I filled out the form SS-4 as the TOPS form 
S-069 explained. I then called teh IRS and gave them all of the information 
over the phone, they gane me an EIN number in a few minutes. I wrote it on 
the form and used that to open a checking account.
