Can't remember where I found this, but here's something to try when
making George's Taco Soup. Be sure and read the bottom comment.
Homemade Taco Seasoning
1/4 Cup dried minced onion
2 Tbs chili powder
1 Tbs cornstarch
1 Tbs crushed dried red pepper
1 Tbs garlic powder
1 Tbs oregano
1 Tbs ground cumin
Combine all ingredients. Mix well. Place in a storage container with a
tight-fitting lid. Store in a cool dry place for up to one year. Stir
or shake before each use. To use as a substitute for commercially
prepared taco seasoning, measure 2 Tbs per pound of ground meat.
The above ingredients make the equivalent of 6 (1.25 oz) packages of
taco seasoning. Why bother, you might ask? The 2 tablespoons of
homemade mix you substitute for a 1.25 oz. package seasoning has 30.6 mg
of sodium as compared to 2,328 mg sodium in the packaged mix!!
